Huntsville Hawks U9 Field Lacrosse team finishes the season on top

The Huntsville Hawks U9 field lacrosse team won their round-robin tournament in Brampton this past weekend (May 14) wrapping up the season and bringing home a trophy.

The team played three games in the tournament.

In their first game they played Hamilton and beat them handily 13-5. Their second game was against Mimico 1 where where they also had great success beating them 12-7. The final game was against Whitby 2 and the Hawks tied the game 8-8.

The team wraps up an impressive season with 11 wins, 2 ties and 2 losses, and posted a stellar 168 goals for
versus 79 goals against – a goal differential of 89.

Coach Kory Shirtliff said the team really came together over the course of the season.

It’s pretty much the same team we had last year for box lacrosse minus a couple of kids so they all played together before and they all enjoy themselves. They really came together as a team when it really counted. The competition at the start of the season wasn’t strong but at the end of the season it was really strong. We beat some really heavy hitters in the lacrosse world. I would say we won the ‘B’ Championship.

The season wraps up now for field lacrosse but it sounds like this team will be a competitive force for years to come. “None of these kids have ever played field lacrosse,” Shirtliff said. “They have only played box lacrosse. For them to learn the game, how it’s played, and how fast they caught on to it really impressed me.”
