This past weekend the Oddfellows Lodge 275 Huntsville Hawks Tyke Rep team traveled to Niagara on the Lake to compete in the Thunderbirds’ Tournament. They came away from the weekend with a silver medal and bragging rights as they defeated teams from much larger centers.
Huntsville didn’t have much trouble with the competition in round-robin play taking Wallaceburg 10 – 5, topping Clarington 2 7 – 1 and beating St. Catharines 7 – 4.
From there they moved onto the semi finals against Newmarket, defeating them 9 – 7. It was a battle until the end but the kids pulled together to get the victory.
The championship game was against Oshawa 1. The team came out strong in the first period and popped two quick ones in to put the fear in Oshawa. It was a pretty even game, goal-for-goal, until the third period when Oshawa went on a run that Huntsville couldn’t stop.
Tyke coach Kory Shirtliff said the weekend was excellent and the team really came together to be the best they could be when the stakes were high . “We ran into a tough team in the championship game and came up short but it will make us a stronger team as we work to the Provincial’s in August.”
