The Huntsville High School Junior and Senior Girls suffered tough losses on Tuesday night in the GBSSA Basketball Championships at HHS. Both teams had undefeated regular seasons, and were crowned Muskoka Parry Sound Champions earlier this month.
“Their competition came ready to play and executed perfectly,” said coach Sue Fawcett of the teams the Hoyas had to face in the finals.
For the Junior Girls, it was a rematch against the St. Joe’s Jaguars of Barrie, who defeated Huntsville by a narrow margin earlier this season. The Jaguars took control of the game early, only missing two shots in the entire first half against the Hoyas. The visiting team built up a considerable lead before the break, and continued to hit their shots until the final buzzer in the Junior Hoyas final game of the season.
“The leap into GBSSA was huge, but we knew it would be,” said Fawcett, who prepared her team by entering the girls in additional tournaments throughout the season. “We played St. Joe’s in a tournament two weeks ago, and only lost by three.”
In the later matchup of the night, Huntsville’s senior team had an amazing final game to end their season. The action went back and forth as the Hoyas continued to exchange the lead with Patrick Fogarty High School of Orillia through three quarters. In the game’s final four minutes, however, it would be Patrick Fogarty that would pull away and come out with the win.
“The seniors lost by five, but played their best game of the season,” said Fawcett of the team.
