This past Thursday (March 22, 2018) the Huntsville Curling Club hosted the Chartwell Traditions & Chartwell Rogers Cove Mixed Bonspiel.
The ever popular Chartwell bonspiel attracted competitive senior teams from Orillia, Bracebridge, Powasson and Parry Sound to the Huntsville Curling Club. Jim Moore from Powasson, who “held the broom” for Aussa Pennial’s ceremonial opening rock, has participated in this bonspiel every year since its inception in 1999. He jokes that he has a standing invitation from Huntsville to attend. It is said that fine wine improves with age… the same is true about Jim’s curling. For the first time ever, Jim’s team won both their games finishing in second place by beating out the Huntsville team skipped by Dave Rigby. The exciting eighth end finished with Jim’s single rock sitting on the button, well buried behind a wall of guards.
In the end, the Huntsville Curling Club head ice maker Roy Sullivan and his team narrowly beat out the competition, securing first place in the spiel.
Roy’s sweepers, Barb Burton and John McDonald had to “hurry hard” to “hold the line” allowing his tight shot to slip by the guards to make his runback double narrowly winning the end from the Bracebridge Team skipped by Michael Michalski.
The Huntsville Curling Club wraps up one of its most successful seasons ever with a sold out Steak Spiel finale on April 3 and 4, 2018.
