Huntsville Councillor Monty Clouthier is running again for Brunel Ward

With one term under his belt, Brunel Ward Huntsville Councillor Monty Clouthier filed his nomination papers Friday.

He said he enjoys representing Brunel and said there are projects that he has pushed for during his term on council that he wants to see through. He said Swallowdale Road is expected to be redone this year, as well as major repairs on West Browns Road and work on Otter Lake Road. “It’s supposed to be done this year; hopefully, everything gets done, and we’re starting work on the Locks this summer.”

“I’ve actually enjoyed myself doing the job. I know it’s been quite controversial at times, but a lot of tough decisions were made with this council.” Clouthier said he knows residents were upset with the council’s tax increases, but said the municipality was in need of equipment replacement and building maintenance, which had not been done during the COVID years when increases were kept to a minimum. “When you’re wearing out plow truck tires, they’ve got to be replaced,” he said, adding that the price of things has also escalated significantly. “I know myself, a truck tire used to cost $400, now they’re $975,” said Clouthier, who recently sold his business, Muskoka Crane.

“We’ve upgraded a lot of our facilities, did repairs on them. That stuff is done, so we can go forward and keep the taxes at a minimum,” he said.

Clouthier said the Town is looking at a new operations building. He said he is pushing for the building to be reconstructed on the Town’s existing property in phases so the impact on the tax base is minimized. He also wants to see a municipal salt dome constructed on the same property. “We don’t have a salt dome, and it’s costing us a lot of extra money because we don’t. So I’d like to see a salt dome built first and then a phased-in approach over the years of the whole operation there,” adding that the Town also has a new operations director coming on board.

Clouthier said things have been good in Brunel. Some are disgruntled over the traffic calming barriers that went up on Woodland Heights, but “we’re working with that group on that.”

Clouthier is now retired from his business, Muskoka Crane, which he recently sold. He is the President of the Junior Otters hockey team, and he and his wife volunteer regularly for Food4Kids Muskoka. He has five grandchildren — three of them live in Huntsville, along with his son and his wife.

“I’ve learned a lot over the four years, I really have going in, and I think I can bring a lot going forward to Brunel. I don’t want to run anywhere else. I like Brunel. I’ve got to know the constituents here and most of them got to know me…”

The nomination period ends at 2 p.m. on August 21, 2026. The municipal election takes place on Monday, October 26, 2026. More information can be found HERE.
