Huntsville Council welcomes new fire chief

The Town of Huntsville and Township of Lake of Bays have a new fire chief.

Steve Hernen, who has been at the helm of the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department for the past 23 years, introduced Rob Collins as this area’s new fire chief at Huntsville Council’s September 28 meeting.

Collins is moving to Huntsville from The Blue Mountains area and before that he lived in Port Hope, according to Hernen.

“I’m quite familiar with Rob because when we did some restructuring at the fire hall a few years ago and we picked Rob’s brains and we followed some of what they’d done in Blue Mountain, so Rob is quite familiar with our operation… And Rob shares a lot of the same beliefs that I share when it comes to fire prevention and fire response,” said Hernen, referring to the merits of a good residential sprinkler system, the value of the volunteer fire service, and what it means to the community.

Hernen will help Collins through the transition and continue in his position as the municipality’s director of operations and protective services.

I would have liked to have seen one of our local men offered the job.

    I guess Hernen knows best.
