Huntsville Community Choir to bid director Jillian McDougall farewell at upcoming concert

It can be said that music plays a part in all of our lives. It evokes emotions of love, happiness, reflection and sadness. We can hear a song and it can take us back to a specific time and day in our lives. It can bring forth forgotten memories, create pictures of moments past, inspire us with ideas or just bring us a feeling of peace and serenity.

Those are currently sentiments being expressed by members of the Huntsville Community Choir as they prepare for their final concert of the 2015-2016 season. “Movie Melodies” will take place on Sunday, June 19, at 2:30 pm at the Algonquin Theatre, and will, as the title suggests, present some favorite songs of movies past.

It will however be the last concert for the choir’s beloved Choral Director, Jillian McDougall. Jillian has decided to step down after seven wonderful years of leading the choir through a vast variety of music, themes and challenges.

“We hope everyone will come out on Sunday to help us bid Jillian a fond and loving ‘adieu,'” states John Riedl, the choir’s current President. “She came to us as a dream come true and from day one it was not only a position that she was eager to fill, but her passion for music and song was quickly absorbed by all the choir. Her dedication to the choir was absolute and she happily met all the challenges that working with a varied group of 60 members implied. And there were many.”

There was a tough three-concert schedule, every year for seven years, teaching and learning new material, expanding repertoire, and challenging the choir to rise to new heights. There were special events like the Olympic Torch Relay, a fundraising concert for the YWCA with Robert Pilon, a workshop and a performance with the Elmer Eisler Singers just to mention a few.

Add to that raising three children, her involvement with her church and her participation in numerous musicals in the Huntsville area over the years and you have one busy lady.

“While we are surely sad to see Jillian depart,” adds Mr. Riedl, “we want to celebrate all of the wonderful times she gave us. Her dedication was unmatched, her love for the choir unbounded, and her enthusiasm unending. We hope that those of our audience who have followed Jillian’s development of the choir will come out and help us celebrate her one more time.” Tickets for Movie Melodies are $20 and available at the Algonquin Theatre box office or online here.
