The Huntsville Hoyas boys’ soccer team are the Muskoka-Parry Sound (MPS) high school champions after defeating their fierce rivals from Bracebridge 3-1 in the MPS final.
Both the Hoyas and the Bracebridge Muskoka Lakes Lakers won their semi-finals, and the four area teams met on October 22 at Almaguin Highlands Secondary School for the playoffs.
The Lakers kicked off the day by defeating the host Almaguin Highlanders 5-0 in a match where Bracebridge coach Jason Sprathoff was able to get his bench players a lot of quality game time. Five different players scored for the Lakers with the whole team playing well together.
Then the Hoyas showed their attacking prowess in a 6-0 victory over the Gravenhurst Gryphons, also with five different players finding the scoresheet.
The final was a very close match throughout with both teams looking dangerous and missing early chances to take the lead in the first half. Eventually, the Hoyas took the lead late in the first half and were up 1-0 at halftime.
The second half was more of the same, but then the Hoyas hit a couple of goals late to take a 3-0 lead. The Lakers responded with one of their own, but there wasn’t enough time to make a real comeback.
“The good news is that both our teams are heading to the Georgian Bay playoffs,” says Sprathoff, adding that he’s proud of their efforts this season.
Muskoka is hosting the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA or GBs for short) regional championships that bring together qualifying teams from the MPS, Simcoe County, and Georgian Bay areas.
The winner of this four-team tournament, which is being held in Huntsville at Conroy Park on October 30, will qualify for OFSAA (the high school provincial championships). OFSAA is being held in the spring of 2026.
The Hoyas are hoping home-field advantage will serve them well.
“We are really proud of our boys’ efforts and attitudes this year,” says Hoyas coach Jeff Young. “We’re looking forward to hosting the regionals and our team is hungry to return to OFSAA.”
