After an undefeated season, the Huntsville Hoyas Junior Boys Volleyball team took their winning streak all the way to the Muskoka Parry Sound championships on November 9.
In the semi-finals, the Hoyas defeated Gravenhurst High in three straight sets. Up against the BMLSS Lakers in the finals, the team was down two sets to one before coming back to tie it up in the fourth. In the tie-breaking fifth set, which is played to 15 points instead of the usual 25, the Hoyas came away with a solid 15-7 win over the Lakers.
Jack Solecki, a grade 10 student who plays middle, said the team worked hard all season to earn their win.
“We practiced four times a week after school,” said Solecki. “Mr. Spiers gave up a lot of time to coach us. A lot of us were new to the team but we hadn’t lost a game the whole season. We felt good going into (the finals).”
In an early-season tournament, the Hoyas got a taste of the teams they’ll be up against at the GBSSA championships on Tuesday, November 15 in Angus. “They’re from bigger towns and they’re usually better,” said Solecki. “We weren’t as good then as we are now so we’re hoping to go pretty far.”
