Hoyas fall short of OFSAA

It was a dreary, wet, and cool day at Conroy Park in Huntsville for the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA) boys’ AA soccer finals on October 30.

However, the play on the field in the two semi-finals and championship match was anything but dreary.

In the first semi-final, the Huntsville Hoyas came out of the gate with great determination and found themselves with a quick 4-0 lead midway through the first half of the game. The lead would continue to grow as the host team booked their spot in the final with an 8-1 thrashing of Innisdale SS from Barrie.

The second semi-final saw the Bracebridge Muskoka Lakes Lakers in tough against St. Theresa Catholic from Midland. Despite a spirited effort, the Lakers fell 2-0 to St. Theresa.

The final was a chippy affair with both teams setting a physical tone early on. While the first half was a relatively balanced match for both teams, St. Theresa went ahead 1-0 on a long ball pass that their striker finished with a strong shot.

A second goal for the visitors came about from an unfortunate play where the Hoyas goalie handling a pass back from his defender, resulting in a free-kick inside the 18-yard box. The St. Theresa players made sure to get the ball in the net from that excellent position.

Though the Hoyas bounced back and created some opportunities late in the first half and early in the second half, they just couldn’t find the goal that would surely energize the squad.

Around half-way through the second half, one of the Hoyas players was red carded after getting an initial yellow card and asking aloud what he did to deserve the yellow card.

With the Hoyas down one man the rest of the match, they fought as hard as they could, but eventually playing against an extra player caught up with them as St. Theresa eventually scored three more goals to win the match 5-0.

The result means the Hoyas are done for the year, while St. Theresa will be representing the GBSSA region at OFSAA in the spring.
