Hospice Huntsville’s annual Purple Tea Party continues to grow year after year.
“It’s great to see so many people out in a sea of purple supporting Hospice Huntsville,” said Deputy Mayor Karin Terziano during the event on April 8 at Huntsville Place Mall. “We’re so lucky to have the services of Hospice Huntsville and all the volunteers and all of you folks out here supporting them.”
The Purple Tea Party is a fundraising event leading up to the annual Hike for Hospice, which takes place on May 7 this year.
Hospice Huntsville is responsible for raising 50 per cent ($534,000) of its annual costs, the other 50 per cent comes from the Local Health Integration Network.
Last year Hospice Huntsville raised about $56,000 from the hike. This year the goal is $55,000.
Melissa Polischuk, fundraising and public relations coordinator for Hospice Huntsville, said family and friends have found walking in memory of those they’ve lost to be a positive and meaningful experience, giving them a way to celebrate their lives.
“It’s a way of giving back to the community but also raising awareness on end-of-life care,” she said. “It’s important because it affects us all. As we go through life, at some point you’ll be in need, whether it’s a family member, friend or your neighbour.”
Three young violinists from the Huntsville Suzuki School of Music performed throughout the event for guests.

“Palliative care is so needed,” said PSW Samantha Giese, the mother of the three violinists. She’ll soon graduate as an RPN. “It’s the last time to say goodbye in a home-like environment when you can’t be home any more.”
Funds raised from the Purple Tea Party go toward the overall fundraising goal of the hike. The 2017 tea party raised $17,102 from pre-event donations, admission donations, the tea pot centerpiece auction and the silent auction. It’s the most successful Purple Tea Party fundraising event since its inception in 2013.
