Millions of dollars in highway work and bridge and sewer improvements extending from Huntsville to Gravenhurst is already underway.
Doug Rivers, area contracts engineer for the Ministry of Transportation, indicated that the ministry has hired Fowler Construction to complete a $12 million contract for highway paving that starts at Port Sydney and continues north on Hwy 11 for approximately 10 kilometres.
“We will do some rock removal and adjusting guard rails, but the bulk of money goes into paving,” stated Rivers. “Asphalt is expensive.”
The project began a few months ago, with work expected to be completed around the end of November. Rivers said the work will cause some delays, specifically when the highway is reduced to one lane just north of Port Sydney.
“It’s a deep culvert so we have to go to a single lane,” he stated.
Extensive bridge and sewer work on the Hwy 11 corridor south of Gravenhurst started about two months ago. Rivers indicated that the contract, awarded to OHL Construction Canada Inc., is estimated to cost $7 million.
“We do regular maintenance on the bridge to keep it liable,” said Rivers. “If you let it go too long it deteriorates too fast. [The work] is fairly significant.”
The bridge work is expected to be completed sometime in July or August next year. The contract also includes fixing culverts near the highway corridor and conducting sewer work.
