Hawks lose first two under new coach Karl Carnduff

Two games after he took over the coaching reins of the Huntsville Jr. C Hawks lacrosse team, Karl Carnduff sees glimmers of hope despite two more losses.

The Hawks lost in Peterborough in an away game 15-2 last weekend and Thursday night were defeated 14-7 by the Barrie Bombers at the Jack Bionda arena.

In both games the Hawks ran into penalty trouble and against Barrie it cost them five power play goals.

“They’re a fast team and we just don’t don’t react and start thinking too much,” observed Carnduff. “It’s a game of reaction. If you think you get in trouble.

“It’s hard when most of your guys are from out of town to get one good practice but we still have lots of games left. We’ll be fine”.

The Hawks record is now one win and nine losses and Carnduff says this is really a building year for this team.

“Most of our experienced guys are either in Orillia, Orangeville or Burlington and they’re our shooters. These guys are growing, got good leadership, so that’s what we are trying to work on.”

The Barrie Bombers built up a 5-1 lead after the first period and were ahead 10-6 after forty minutes. Julian Simeoni and Jack Drinkwater each scored a pair of goals with singles going to Devon Blunt, Graydon MacDonald and Spencer Lavallee.

The one thing that has impressed Carnduff is the determination of his young team.

“We don’t quit,” he said when asked what he takes away from the loss to Barrie. “We haven’t quit yet. We get mad and we are trying to get out of that mode and go get them tomorrow. We try to win every shift, every game. If we get scored on you keep your chin up and get back to the bench or the faceoff circle.”

Huntsville plays at home Saturday, June 10 against Whitby, Peterborough June 17 and Halton Hills June 25 in an afternoon game. They play away in Clarington Sunday June 18, and twice in Barrie on June 23 and June 30.
