Jr C Hawks drop first four games of the season

This is not exactly what the Huntsville Hawks had in mind when they began their Ontario Jr C season. Now four games in it is obvious that things need to change if they have any hopes of challenging for a playoff spot.

The Junior C Hawks lost their fourth game in a row Sunday in Gloucester 10-5; a team that coach Don Monahan says they should be able to beat.

“Gloucester came out strong,” he said, “and our offence was flat and our defence struggled. We also ran into penalty troubles.”

The loss came on the heels of a 14-9 defeat in Cornwall.

“We came out of the gate strong,” said Monahan, but had penalty troubles in the second period and came up short against a team we should have beat.”

There are no panic buttons yet, but some concern after losing their first four games.

“We have a young team,” said Monahan who is also new at the coaching helm this year. “Our goalies are first year and need time to develop. We lost game changing players from last year. Our young team needs to learn a “new” system, offence and defence. We need to quit taking foolish penalties at game-changing times. Competing is what counts. Nothing else.”

Huntsville’s next game is at home Thursday night against the Clarington Shamrox, so it doesn’t get any easier. The Shamrox were the class of the league last season and has been the nemesis of the Hawks for the last three years.
