H.O.L.D. presents $5,000 to Dwight Lions for beach washroom project

Dwight Beach is one step closer to having permanent washrooms in place.

On Monday night (June 27), the H.O.L.D. (Hillside Oxtongue Lake Dwight) Community Group presented the Dwight Lions Club with a $5,000 donation toward a project to build an accessible washroom and change room facility near the beach. Those funds bring the total raised so far to approximately $17,000 of the $75,000 needed for materials for the project. Labour will be provided as an in-kind donation from local businesses as well as volunteers from the Dwight Lions Club and community.

The project is in honour of Lions Club International’s 100th Anniversary in 2017. The organization presented a Centennial Service Challenge to its clubs and the Dwight Lions Club responded with a local community needs assessment study that identified the dire need for a washroom and change room facility near Dwight Beach.

“It’s a very worthwhile project,” says Joe Deniet, Chair of the Dwight Lions Centennial Committee. “We asked the community what they wanted from the Lions Club for a project and that was the most talked about item on the assessment.”

A revised design for the project was presented to Lake of Bays Council on June 21. It includes fully accessible four-season washrooms/change rooms, baby changing stations, and available wall space for community and tourism information. The washrooms will be located at 1009 Dwight Bay Road, next to the post office on the site of the former municipal building. Deniet says they are hoping to break ground in the spring of 2017, assuming the funds needed have been raised by then, with the facility being complete by mid-summer of 2017.

Donations can be made at the Township of Lake of Bays office, earmarked for the washroom project. Tax receipts are issued for donations greater than $25. Anyone interested in being involved can contact Joe Deniet at 705-349-0113.

The project is a partnership between the Dwight Lions Club, local businesses, community groups and the Township of Lake of Bays.
