Our world is rapidly changing and every day we are bombarded with instant news from every corner of the world on our smartphones and computers. For most of us, this inundation of facts will include the weather. Not to diminish our need for information but weather is really what is important to most of us. We are always asking “Will it be sunny, raining or will it snow? What do I wear, can I get to work, will the schools be open?”
To get that information we all rely on weather forecasts. Forecasts are compiled by very smart people using satellites, computers, and artificial intelligence to provide us with forecasts that are frequently wrong.
What is a person to do but to use every conceivable resource available and that includes groundhogs? These wonderful creatures that live amongst us in burrows in the ground are known far and wide for their ability to predict the most important question any of us can ask. When will winter end? They do it by simply seeing or not seeing their shadow.
Most of us have heard about the most important groundhogs, namely American Punxsutawney Phil, Shubenacadie Sam from Nova Scotia, and of course Ontario’s own Wiarton Willie, but have you ever heard about our very own Hillside Hank? Hank lives in the wilds of Hillside just outside of Huntsville. He is very shy and wants to stay that way. However, this year he did share his forecast for the months to come with this writer and he predicts that we will have an early spring.
Just for laughs
