For the 13th year, an enthusiastic group of golfers converged on Deerhurst’s Lakeside golf course in June for a day of fun and fundraising for a great cause. And on July 18, members of the Golf Fore the Girls organizing committee presented the result of their efforts: a cheque for $30,438 to the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.

Funds from the annual tournament are earmarked for breast health and the mammography unit at Huntsville Hospital. More than $330,000 has been raised over the past 13 years.

“(The day) was awesome,” said committee member Reva Frame. “People keep saying how wonderful it was.”

One-hundred-and-twenty-two golfers supported the sold-out event, many clad in brightly coloured costumes and riding carts adorned with clever slogans like ‘Hey cancer, lei off our coconuts’ and ‘Big and small, save them all’.

“It’s amazing how year after year new slogans show up that we’ve never seen before,” said committee member Janet Markham.

Most of the golfers return each year to support the cause, but there’s always room for more, said Markham. “You don’t have to have been involved in the past. We are certainly interested in hearing from anybody who is interested in being a first-time player. We have some flexibility as to how many foursomes we can add.” Watch the Golf Fore the Girls Facebook page for details on 2020 registration.

The committee is also in search of new members. Anissa Boosamra and Madison Low joined this year, and there’s room for more “if anyone is interested in stepping up and getting involved,” said Markham. Interested volunteers can email the committee at [email protected]

Trish Kruusmagi, Development Officer Stewardship & Events for the Huntsville Hospital Foundation, said “We really appreciate the effort that goes into the volunteer committee and all their hard work.”

The golfers were treated to some new elements this year. A live auction for caddies Branden and Brock from Moose FM 105.5 was a hit, as was the new mixed-grill menu that included a burger bar and corn on the cob.

Many of the same sponsors were back to support the event again. “It amazes us that year after year we have the commitment that we do from these big sponsors who always step up,” said Markham.

Golf Fore the Girls has been held at Deerhurst Resort since its inception and the resort has been “hugely supportive”, said Markham. In 2017 they launched a pink golf cart program, which this year raised an additional $700 for the tournament through premium cart rental fees, she noted.
