Lake of Bays Mayor Terry Glover has filed his nomination papers to run once more for Township mayor in the upcoming October municipal elections. So far, he’s the only candidate vying for the position.
He said he’s putting his name forward again in order to see the completion of several projects started under his mandate. Those projects include renovations at the Lake of Bays Community Centre in order to create a multi-purpose hub for the community.
He also noted via email correspondence with Doppler that the municipality is in the process of receiving a consultant’s report on a long-awaited park study in order to improve the Township’s use of outdoor space for residents and visitors alike.
“I have led the charge on better broadband at both levels and would like to continue to advocate for better broadband to the upper-tier governments who have made many promises in this regard to be completed in 2024,” noted Glover.
Other initiatives he’d like to see completed include a new approach to budgeting the Township’s finances in order to make the process more transparent for residents. “I want to continue my membership with the Muskoka Area Indigenous Leadership Table as we are seeing progress and getting noticed by many other cities and Indigenous groups. I also hope to develop a more creative and effective economic development strategy to better work with our businesses and help them where possible,” he added.
He said some of the challenges facing the region involve the protection of health care and long-term care for its residents as well as housing. “I also want to continue the discussion to look at more creative ways to address the housing crisis and to develop more urban housing.”
Glover also hopes to work at both levels of government to be better prepared for emergencies such as floods, tornadoes, and health-related outbreaks.
“I also hope to grow the brand of the Township of Lake of Bays through several new ideas like the already launched Arts Loop initiative. I also hope to build up the established relationships with provincial and federal ministers to gain every advantage possible for my township,” he said, adding that he also looks forward to participating in public events and meeting with residents personally to improve communication and address any issues they may have.
