The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reporting one new COVID-19 death in Huntsville today, the fourth coronavirus-related death in Huntsville since the pandemic began. No further details were immediately available.

COVID-19 cases continued to rise in Muskoka this month, with a total of 100 new cases since Dec. 1: 23 in Huntsville, two in Lake of Bays, nine in Muskoka Lakes, 24 in Bracebridge, nine in Gravenhurst, and 33 in Georgian Bay.

Eighty are currently active: 16 in Huntsville, one in Lake of Bays, seven in Muskoka Lakes, 20 in Bracebridge, eight in Gravenhurst, and 28 in Georgian Bay. One person is in hospital.

Three cases (as of Dec. 16) have been attributed to an outbreak at Irwin Memorial PS in Dwight, and five to an outbreak at Algonquin Grace Residential Hospice. Earlier outbreaks at VK Greer and Spruce Glen were declared over on Dec. 3 and 10 respectively.

Vaccinations have also been increasing, particularly among 5-11 year-olds who recently became eligible for vaccines, as well as booster doses for those over 50. On Monday, Dec. 20, anyone over 18 who had their second dose of vaccine more than 84 days previously will become eligible for a booster dose.

SMDHU medical officer of health, Dr. Charles Gardner, said that he may impose tighter restrictions beginning Dec. 20, including a reduction in capacity limits to 50 per cent in some settings like restaurants and fitness facilities, as well as limiting social gatherings to 10 people. An announcement is expected by tomorrow afternoon.
