Former Lake of Bays man pleads guilty of threatening with a sawed-off shotgun

A former Baysville man who sent threatening videos firing a sawed-off shotgun recently had his day in court.

Appearing virtually in a Bracebridge courtroom, Benjamin Jones, 21, formerly of Lake of Bays Township, pleaded guilty to threatening and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Court heard that on Sept. 15, 2020, Jones and a second man went to another person’s house uninvited and were asked to leave. A physical confrontation ensued and Jones and the other man warned the owner of the house that they had “real guns,” court heard.

Sometime later Jones sent a text message to the victim saying he was going to “shoot his place up.” Jones also sent a video to the victim’s girlfriend of him firing what appeared to be a sawed-off shotgun.

The threats were reported and a warrant was obtained to search Jones’ residence in Lake of Bays Township. Inside police found a sawed-off shotgun stored in a suitcase in Jones’ bedroom.

The police determined Jones had no license, the prohibited firearm was stolen and it was being stored illegally.

Jones was sentenced to 60 days of house arrest.

60 days house arrest seems very light for such a crime. How do the victims feel about their safety?
