Hey, basketball fans! Come out to watch elite-level women’s basketball in your own home town this Friday, October 11 and help out a local league at the same time.
The York University Lions will take on the Nipissing Lakers to raise money for the Huntsville Hurricanes basketball program and the York women’s basketball team.
Taylor McAlpine and Celeste Dupuis, former HHS and Hurricanes players, are on opposing teams, McAlpine in her final year with the Lions and Dupuis in her first year with the Lakers.
Coordinator, Taylor McAlpine, wanted to have a homecoming game for her final basketball season with York in her favourite gym in the world.
When McAlpine heard that Nipissing’s women’s team included Celeste Dupuis, who is in her first year of Ontario University Athletics (OUA), she began to organize this preseason fundraiser.
This is an important game for McAlpine as she is coming off of a redshirt season after recovering from ACL surgery. She was part of the York women’s basketball team but was only able to practice during her recovery program. She has trained at York University all summer and is ready to play for her fifth and final season as an OUA player.
Dupuis and McAlpine both played on the HHS girls basketball teams and on the Huntsville Hurricanes basketball teams. They have played together and trained together and now they will play against each other. Both are grateful for this opportunity. McAlpine said that she is excited to give back to the community basketball program that gave her so much.
“I think providing people in Huntsville the opportunity to watch elite-level basketball without having to go anywhere is incredible,” said McAlpine.
Tip-off is at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 11 at Huntsville High School. Tickets (available at the door) are $10 for adults (19 and up) and $5 for kids aged 6-18. Children 5 years and under are admitted for free.
The event will include raffles, a 50/50 draw, prizes, a half-time show and more. Spectators will also have an opportunity to meet the athletes and coaches following the game.
