UPDATED on Monday April 7, 2025.
On Friday, while speaking in Orillia about the ice storm recovery efforts, Ontario Premier Doug Ford made a surprising announcement. He said Orillia would be getting a new hospital.
Speculation over the weekend began circulating and some wondered what, if anything, the announcement means for Muskoka’s redevelopment plans for two new hospital sites.
Doppler reached out to Huntsville Mayor Nancy Alcock, who stated that she would look into it but had no further comment.
Lake of Bays Mayor Terry Glover, who chairs the District Health Committee and is Deputy Chair of Muskoka, said the announcement is good news.
“I am thrilled to hear of any new investment in health care infrastructure in our region. I am confident that as this project progresses, it will not negatively impact the progress of Muskoka’s new hospitals,” said Glover.
Doppler has reached out to Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare, which manages both the Bracebridge and Huntsville hospitals, to see how the news will impact healthcare in the area.
“As a close partner on several programs with Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital, we are very happy for them. This is very good news for the Region. It has no impact on our plans to bring two new hospitals to Muskoka,” according to a statement provided by MAHC.
