Around 8:00 am on August 28 and 8:30 am on August 29, 2025, the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department responded to two separate reported structure fires. One of the homes was located in Huntsville and the other was located in Port Cunnington, Lake of Bays.
In both cases the occupants of the homes were alerted by a smoke alarm. Once the alarms were activated and the occupants began investigating the cause of the alarm, they noticed smoke and the smell of burning in their homes. Recognizing that a fire may be present in the homes, both households evacuated immediately and called 911. No injuries were reported at either incident.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a light haze of smoke in both homes, but no fire was found. After using thermal imaging cameras to check for hot spots and ensuring no carbon monoxide was present, firefighters safely allowed the occupants back into the homes. Furnace technicians later confirmed that the cause of the smoke in one case was due to a melted wire inside the furnace.
As members of the community are preparing for the winter season, the fire department recommends having your furnace inspected and serviced at least once a year by a qualified professional. Keep things that can burn at least 3 feet (1 metre) away from the furnace. The furnace area should be clean and uncluttered. Check your dryer, furnace, stove and fireplace vents to ensure that no rodents or birds have blocked the vent with a nest. If a fire starts in your home, get out and stay out.
