Fire crews kept busy with multiple calls due to high winds

The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department responded to 33 calls for service between Friday May 4 and Sunday May 6.

The majority of the calls were for power lines down and arcing while other responses were for carbon monoxide (CO) alarm activations and false fire alarm activations.

Thankfully there were no reported injuries. The frequency of these calls diminished once the winds had calmed late Friday night.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, crews were called out to a reported structure fire at an auto parts recycling facility on Aspdin Rd. in the Town of Huntsville.

Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire coming from a fully involved structure. Extra resources were brought in from Port Sydney Station 3 and Lake of Bays Station 30 to assist. Fire crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to vehicles and items in close proximity to the building although a motorhome was severely damaged from radiant heat.

The building was not being occupied at the time of the fire. The building and its contents are a total loss. The investigation into the exact cause and circumstances is ongoing.
