Elizabeth Reine Bell (nee Hungerford)

December 30, 1922 – February 22, 2025

On February 22, 2025, at the age of 102, Elizabeth died peacefully surrounded by her family. She raised her large family in homes in Ottawa and on her beloved Lake of Bays in Muskoka. Elizabeth was an avid skier, both downhill and cross-country, and loved skating on Ottawa’s Rideau Canal. During summers at her cottage on Lake of Bays, she would swim before breakfast, spend afternoons in her gardens and down at the lake, and, following a large family dinner, at dusk go for a paddle. Leading a very active and happy life, Elizabeth was fiercely independent right up to a few weeks before her death. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband Don and brother Ted Hungerford, and is survived by her children Robin (Stefania), Thomas (Karen), Elizabeth Anne (Gerardo), Frances Jane (George), Peter (Rebecca) and Susan (Terry) along with nine grandchildren and two great grandsons.

We are grateful to the medical team and caregiving staff at the Huntsville General Hospital and the Algonquin Grace Hospice for the care and compassion they extended to her in her last days. In lieu of flowers, donations to Algonquin Grace Hospice, The Anglican Church of Saint Bartholomew Ottawa, Bruyere Health – Rehabilitation or Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation would be appreciated.  A gathering of family and close friends of Elizabeth in commemoration of her long and active life will be held later this year.
