Elizabeth “Betty” Hughan (nee Johnston) of Port Sydney

April 22, 1959 – August 8, 2025

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of Betty Hughan on August 8, 2025.

Betty was a kind, loving, generous, and gentle woman. Family and friends meant everything to her, and she loved everyone in her life fiercely. She was a tender, caring, and proud wife, stepmother, and grandmother. She shared a deep love and connection to the many family pets she raised.

Betty grew up in the Burks Falls and Katrine area, where she attended elementary and high school. She went to Canadore College in North Bay, where she furthered her career in drafting and surveying, and later worked in the surveying industry in Toronto and Huntsville. It was through this career that she met her beloved husband, Ross. Betty and Ross shared 24 beautiful years together, building a loving and happy life together.

She leaves behind her dear husband Ross, who will miss her deeply, as well as their sweet, gentle puppy, Toby. Betty is also survived by her stepchildren, Sarah (Mark), Jeffrey (Kerrie), grandchildren Georgia and Alexandra, and siblings Carol (Al), Ron (Gloria), and Brian. She joins in heaven her siblings, Bill (Gillian), Bonnie, Glen, Ross, and parents Gordon and Isabel Johnston.

Betty will be warmly remembered by her cousin Lawrence, and close friends Patti, Mary-Ellen, and Wanda, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other friends and family.

The family will receive visitors at the Opatovsky Funeral Home-Dempster Chapel, 210 Ontario Street in Burk’s Falls on Saturday August 16, 2025, from 11 to 12 pm. A service to celebrate Betty’s life will follow in the chapel at 12 pm with Betty’s brother, Dr. Ron Johnston officiating.

Interment in the Burk’s Falls Cemetery.

If desired, memorial donations to the Huntsville Hospital Foundation would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
