Responding after Jacoby Two No-Trump
This week we examine your Jacoby 2NT responses to partner’s opening.
Your partner opens One Heart or One Spade. You respond Jacoby 2NT to show a game-going hand with four-card support of partner’s major suit bid. You know your partnership has a game and possibly slam. Your response of Jacoby 2NT lets partner know this.
Now that you have shared this information, partner’s next bid shows interest in slam by a bid of first round control of the next suit up the line (an Ace or a void). Then you show first round control of the next suit up the line. If either of you skips a suit, you do not have first round control in that suit. If either of you bids the opening suit, that indicates no further controls. The other partner can proceed or just bid the game.
Guideline One: The Jacoby 2NT reply is only to a One Heart or One Spade opening.
Guideline Two: Each bid after Jacoby 2NT refers to first round control looking for slam.
Guideline Three: When a suit is skipped, there is no first round control by that partner.
Guideline Four: Either partner re-bidding the agreed suit indicates no interest in slam.
Guideline Five: Neither partner can PASS until game is reached.

If you wish to promote an activity in your Bridge group or ask a Bridge question, send the information to [email protected] and I will try to include it in this column.
Remember, as we all fight COVID-19 with social isolation, if you want your Bridge fix, online competition is available for all skill levels. From the ACBL Bridge website, you can hook up either to play live people or to play robots. Either way you test or consolidate various Bridge skills. At ACBL.org just click on “Play Bridge” and follow the prompts for various choices.
