Responding to a strong Two Club opening bid
This week we examine your responses to partner’s opening of the strong Two Clubs (22 or more points).
There are several options but I will present the ones I use with my partner.
NOTE: In these guidelines, a biddable suit has the strength of at least a King-Queen plus at least five-card length for a major and six-card length for a minor.
Guideline One: The strong opening of Two Clubs by partner does not suggest any suit.
Guideline Two: You respond to your partner’s opening with one of the following:
- Two Spades promises 6 plus points and a Spade suit.
- Two Hearts promises 6 plus points and a Heart suit.
- Two Diamonds is a waiting bid of any number of points and no suit.
- Three Clubs promises 8 plus points and a Club suit.
- Three Diamonds promises 8 plus points and a Diamond suit.
Guideline Three: Responder cannot PASS until game is reached. Opener can PASS when he sees little chance of game.

If you wish to promote an activity in your Bridge group or ask a Bridge question, send the information to [email protected] and I will try to include it in this column.
Remember, as we all fight COVID-19 with social isolation, if you want your Bridge fix, online competition is available for all skill levels. From the ACBL Bridge website, you can hook up either to play live people or to play robots. Either way you test or consolidate various Bridge skills. At ACBL.org just click on “Play Bridge” and follow the prompts for various choices.
