You have opened One Heart. Your partner has Heart support and 10 to 12 points. She is all set to bid Three Hearts to show that she has a limit raise. This would invite you to bid game if you have more than a minimum opening bid.
However, the enemy has jumped in trying to upset all your plans. He bids One Spade. What does your partner do next? It’s easy. She makes a cue bid of Two Spades. A cue bid is the bid of a suit that the player doesn’t have any interest in playing. After all, it wouldn’t be logical for her to want to bid and play in Spades when opponents have already bid them. This cue bid shows her limit raise in Hearts and forces you to bid again.
The advantage of partner’s cue bid rather than a jump to Three Hearts is that partner has described her hand at a lower level. If your hand is dead minimum, you may bid Three Hearts to play. With a little more, you can bid the Four Heart game.
But perhaps you have a hand that possibly could make a slam. You now have the option of showing another feature of your hand by bidding, for example Three Clubs, to show a control in that suit (Ace or King) and slam interest. This could be the start of a cue-bidding sequence in which each of you shows controls up the line in other suits. Perhaps you find your partner has a void or an Ace in Spades. This may enable you to bid the slam contract.
