Recently in this column, we talked about how you can improve your Bridge game by working with talented friends or relatives. Or, if you are one of the Bill Gates of the world, you can hire a professional Bridge player to play with you and sharpen up your game.
Presently, we are visiting my cousin, Joan, the person who introduced me, as a teenager, to the game of Bridge. She oversaw my first stumbling steps towards learning this wonderful game. She taught another cousin, Patty and me, at the same time. I guess not everyone is as thrilled about the game of Bridge as I was. I still recall Patty’s frequent enthusiastic comments, “Oh, goody, I’m Dummy.”
Over the years, Joan and I continued to play Bridge, Social Bridge mainly, and we became more proficient. Patty, well she played Poker. I was puzzled one day when she mentioned that her Bridge game was on Wednesday night. “I didn’t know you were playing Bridge now!” I exclaimed. “Oh, I’m not,” she replied, “I belong to a group of women who play Poker. I just call it my Bridge club.”
Quite a few years later, we were invited to visit Joan and her husband at their cottage (or camp as per the local vocabulary) on a beautiful stretch of beach on Lake Superior. I was thrilled because the dates of the invitation preceded the dates of the Regional Bridge Tournament in nearby Sault Saint Marie. We conveniently could do both.
We had an entertaining visit with Joan and her husband including many Bridge games during which we introduced them to Bidding Boxes, Duplicate Boards and the intricacies of Duplicate Bridge scoring. So then they joined us at the tournament and played some pairs games and some team games with us. We all did well, and I felt good that I had the chance to return the favour of those early Bridge lessons so long ago.
