Duplicate bridge results and tip: Happy Mother’s Day

By Val Rhead

I do not think of my mother as a skilled Bridge player. But she relished her regular two-table Toronto games for about thirty years. I remember the excitement every year as she prepared for Club’s annual “fun” excursion to Buffalo for a weekend with the girls. And when I started to play bridge, I remember this one piece of sage advice she gave me that sticks with me to this day. “Get rid of your losers while you still have control,” and she was not referring to my boyfriends!

For example, some novice Bridge players are anxious to cash in their winning Aces and Kings when they first pick up their hand. After all, they explain, if I wait too long, I may “go to bed with my Ace” and it would be wasted. But, when they do this, all their opponents’ Queens and Jacks and spot cards are then good. So, if you have some tricks you have to lose, lose them early while you still have your Aces and Kings that keep you in control of your hand.

Well, Mum has now gone to that big Bridge Club in the sky, but I often think of her when I’m playing bridge, and I also think of her on Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day, Mum.
