I do not think my mother was a skilled Bridge player but she enjoyed the game and her two-table Toronto Bridge group which lasted for about thirty years. I remember the excitement every year as she prepared for the Bridge club’s annual “fun” excursion to Buffalo. And when I started to play bridge, I remember this one piece of good advice that sticks with me to this day: “Get rid of your losers while you still have control,” and she was not referring to my boyfriends!
When the Heart lead comes down against your contract, it’s important that you plan your hand before you start to play. Let’s say you are in a three No Trump contract. You are delighted that your partner has six Diamonds which makes a good fit with the three Diamonds in your hand, and he has the Ace of Spades. The Diamond suit is solid except it is missing the Ace. Fortunately, the opponents have led a Heart, which is a suit where you have the Ace and the King. You play the Ace. The first priority is not Clubs where there is an inviting finesse of the Ace, Queen, Jack combination. While you have control, you must chase out the Ace of Diamonds before you do anything else. You will then be assured of making your contract. You get five Diamond tricks, one Club trick (the finesse doesn’t work), two Heart tricks and a Spade trick.
Thanks Mum—good advice!
