Duplicate bridge results and tip: even expert players make mistakes

By Valerie Rhead

EVEN EXPERT PLAYERS MAKE MISTAKES

Everyone makes mistakes at bridge—even the experts. Over Thanksgiving, my favorite partner and I were playing a few sessions at the Ottawa Regional Tournament. In one round, our male opponent looked familiar but I couldn’t place him. Perhaps we’d played against him in another tournament.

They handily won the first hand. The second hand was a different story. It was apparent that something had gone wrong. We put them down four tricks. The discussion that ensued showed that there had been a bidding error. They hadn’t played together for a while. The woman partner had forgotten that they used a certain convention. They both laughed good naturedly about it. The woman turned to us and said, “Well, you can tell your friends that you put Jerry Helms down four tricks.” That rang a bell. Jerry is one of the experts who writes regularly for the “Bridge Bulletin”, the monthly magazine that goes out to the 160,000 bridge players that are members of the American Contract Bridge League. No wonder he looked familiar. His picture is in the magazine every month. He had been hired by the Ottawa tournament to give players a bridge lesson each day between sessions.

So mistakes can happen to everyone. We just hope that as we play more bridge, the number of errors we make goes down. But as this story shows, even the experts can mess up. We attended Jerry’s lesson the next day and found it very interesting.
