The Bittern Creek culvert replacement project has encountered some snags, but officials say Ravenscliffe Road access is expected to be restored by April 27.
“We have run into a conflict between the installation of the barrier that keeps the area dry and existing hydro lines, which has slowed progress. We’ve adjusted to address the issue and work is progressing. Our current completion date continues to be within the month of April, with an expected reopening of the road to at least a single lane during the week of April 27,” according to James Steele, District of Muskoka Commissioner of Engineering and Public Works.
Residents have been growing anxious because part of Ravenscliffe Road has been completely closed since March.
The District issued an update on April 7, 2026, noting that it had “prioritized work to expedite activities needed to safely reopen the road to traffic.”
What’s been completed to date?
Construction activities to allow the culvert placement to take place have been completed. These
activities included, but were not limited to, the following:
- Creation of temporary construction access
- Addressing an unexpected conflict with the existing hydro lines
- Installation of a temporary channel, barriers and culvert to divert water flow away from the work
zone and the failing structure
What to expect over the next two weeks:
- Completion of dewatering activities
- Excavation and removal of the existing culvert structure
- Preparation and stabilization of the new base
- Installation of the new culvert and precast concrete cutoff wall
The District of Muskoka acknowledged the condition of the detour route and the stress of increased traffic and noted that it has stepped up maintenance efforts. “However, seasonal conditions such as thawing ground and wet weather continue to present challenges. Crews are actively monitoring and addressing these conditions to maintain the route to required standards.”
Following complaints from community members about the lack of communication on the project, the District noted that it will share a project update each Friday, including any changes to the anticipated timelines.
Updates will be shared HERE.
