The District of Muskoka celebrates Earth Day with free compost

In celebration of Earth Day, the District of Muskoka is once again offering compost to residents at no charge. The giveaway events are co-hosted with each area municipality, and provide residents with an opportunity to pick up free compost created from the District’s leaf and yard waste and Green Bin collection programs.

“The annual Compost Giveaway is just one of the ways that we are able to thank Muskoka’s residents for participating in the Green Bin and Leaf and Yard Waste diversion programs,” says Fred Jahn, Commissioner of Engineering and Public Works. “Composting this waste allows us to divert material from our landfill and offer it to residents for valuable use on their own properties.”

Residents attending the one-day special events are reminded that they are responsible for shoveling their own compost and bringing their own shovels, bags or reusable containers (e.g. blue boxes, reusable containers, kraft paper yard waste bags). Residents are responsible for shovelling and bagging their own compost.

Events are on a first-come, first-served basis and quantity is limited, once it’s gone, it’s gone! In Huntsville, get your compost at 169 Madill Church Road (off Highway 11 Southbound) on Friday, April 21, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

For best growing results, Muskoka’s compost should be mixed with topsoil or another gardening fill, with a ratio of 60 percent topsoil and 40 percent compost. For more information on composting and the use of compost, please visit the Compost Council of Canada website.
