Curious about the building process, or when to get a permit? This session’s for you!

Do you know what you need a building permit for and when it’s okay to proceed without one? Do you have questions about how the building code might affect your renovation plans? Then an upcoming, informal building permit information session is for you.

“Whether you are a first-time home buyer, a weekend warrior, planning for a renovation or looking at updating your deck or dock this season, we have resources and information to ensure your next project is built safely and to code,” says Huntsville’s Chief Building Official, Christopher Nagy. “A lot of residents have questions about the building process.”

Building permits are required for a variety of projects both large and small. If you’re considering a new addition, building a secondary suite, or just fixing up your deck, building officials can answer your questions about what you need to ensure your project is safe and built to code.

“We see a lot of misconception about the enforcement of building codes,” notes Nagy. “A lot of people think it is municipally driven, when it’s actually a provincial code enforceable straight across Ontario.”

There’s also often confusion about whether a building permit is required for a deck – check to be sure before you start building or repairing. “If a deck is attached to a house or cottage, or it’s more than two feet off the ground we want to be sure it is built to code and meets safety requirements,” says Nagy.

At the upcoming, drop-in information session on August 4, building officials will be on hand to answer your questions and help you find possible solutions if your plan isn’t up to code.

Feedback from the Town’s first information session held at the end of June was positive – the casual atmosphere provides lots of opportunity for general questions like when a building permit is required and why, as well as more specific questions related to your project. The Town hopes to run the sessions annually.

Stop by Rolston Home Building Centre (35 Crescent Road) on August 4, 2017 between 10:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to have your questions answered.
