Culinary Arts Pre-apprenticeship Program offers free training in Huntsville

The YMCA of Simcoe / Muskoka is excited to announce that they are delivering another Culinary Arts Pre-Apprenticeship Program here in Huntsville this year! This initiative is being delivered by the Huntsville YMCA Employment and Learning Services in partnership with Georgian College Muskoka and is funded by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development.

The YMCA ran this program successfully last year after hearing from many local employers that they were not able to find skilled culinary staff. Last year the program provided many local employers with trained culinary staff that met the expressed need. To continue to address the shortage of skilled Cooks in the Huntsville area this year’s program will train up to 18 participants to gain their Level 1 Cooks Apprenticeship training that will qualify them to move into an apprenticeship as a Cook, Assistant Cook, Chef, or Institutional Cook.

This program is being offered free to selected participants and runs February 27 – August 13, 2017. This 24-week program includes several parts which include four weeks of academic upgrading and work place skills training, 12 weeks of academic training (Level 1 Cook Apprenticeship training), and eight weeks of paid on-the-job work experience. All training will be delivered in the Huntsville area.

This program is for individuals who are out of school, unemployed (or working less than 20 hours a week) and interested in a career in culinary arts.
