Community rallies around Port Sydney family

Almost $62,000 (updated) has been raised for Kevin Purcell and his family as he embarks on a journey of healing.

On June 1, 2025, Purcell was riding his motorcycle just minutes from home on Muskoka Road 10 when he was struck by a pickup truck and trailer backing out of a driveway, according to a fundraiser organized by him and his family.

He sustained serious injuries and “was quickly airlifted by Ornge to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, where he was placed in an induced coma and intubated for the flight.

“Since arriving in the ICU at St. Mike’s, Kevin has undergone surgery to repair a broken femur, a likely source of internal bleeding, as well as a severely fractured forearm. These are just some of the many injuries he sustained. While his condition has thankfully been upgraded to non-life-threatening, he remains in an induced coma and is still not breathing on his own.

“The best-case scenario right now is at least three more weeks in the ICU, followed by a long road to recovery back home,” states the GoFundMe campaign to help ease the financial burden so his family can focus on his recovery.

“Kevin owns and operates his own HVAC business, and while some of the business operations may be able to continue in a limited way, Kevin himself won’t be able to return to the physical, hands-on work for quite some time. As a small business owner, this means a significant loss of income during what will be a lengthy recovery,” states the fundraiser, which has been updating the community on his condition.

A June 10 update notes: “We’re happy to share that Kevin is making good progress. Over the weekend, he was brought out of the induced coma and the ventilator was removed, and he began speaking on Sunday, a huge milestone. He has since been moved out of the ICU and is continuing his recovery at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. In typical Kevin fashion, he’s eager to get out of the city and back up north to be home with Avery [his five-year-old daughter].”
