The Town of Huntsville welcomes the public to attend a plaque unveiling in recognition of an iconic and much-photographed tree located in Port Sydney at Indian Landing. The ceremony is scheduled at the tree for Earth Day, Sunday April 22, 2018 at 2 p.m.
The idea was an initiative of resident Jennifer Falvy, and she approached the Town, as owner of the tree, to apply for the recognition. As noted by Ms. Falvy, “The stately tree of Indian Landing is a tree of character, community and cultural significance. It sits at the edge of the Muskoka River, its steady and strong limbs reaching out and over the water. The heavy trunk is twisted and turned by time. This is a tree loved by many, both in the community and from afar. The tree is a famous landmark in the community. It has become a tourism destination landmark and a favourite attraction for photographers year-round.”
Forests Ontario provides for the recognition of heritage trees that contain significant meaning within a community. Councillor Jason FitzGerald, Chair of the Municipal Heritage Committee that recommended the application, said, “It is always a pleasure to receive recognition in our communities from other agencies and levels of government. In Port Sydney, we have long appreciated this tree, which is now receiving recognition, and we thank resident Jennifer Falvy for her idea.”
A small plaque, provided by Forests Ontario, will be placed in the vicinity of the tree. Usually, the plaques are placed directly on recognized trees. In this case, Committee considered the overhanging branches and wished to provide more accessible legible placement. Following discussion at the Municipal Heritage Committee meeting February 12, Councillor Jonathan Wiebe offered to donate the installation of the plaque. The full staff report is available on the agenda posted on the town’s website.
A public unveiling of the plaque, with representatives from the Town of Huntsville, Port Sydney and Forests Ontario, is planned for Earth Day, Sunday April 22, 2018 at 2 pm.. at 787 South Mary Lake Road. Everyone is welcome.
