Committee agrees to continue partnership for public access to recreational mountain bike trails

The Town of Huntsville’s General Committee has endorsed a recommendation enabling the continuation of public access to mountain bike trails in Huntsville.

At its February 26 meeting, the committee endorsed a recommendation by Lauren MacDermid, Huntsville Economic Development Officer. She recommended renewing the agreement with Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area and the Huntsville Mountain Bike Association, which expires in August 2025.

“It is important to note as outlined in report DEV-2020-42 that the Town is included in the agreement with Hidden Valley Ski Resort and Huntsville Mountain Bike Association (HMBA) so that the bike trails are publicly accessible. If private lands were utilized and the Town was not included, the trails would be privately operated, and users would most likely be charged a fee or have access only through membership options,” explained MacDermid in her report to committee.

The recommendation calls for a five-year renewal with the option for another five years if all parties are in agreement. The agreement stipulates that the Town will pay Hidden Valley rent at the rate of one dollar ($1.00) annually and that maintenance is the responsibility of the Huntsville Mountain Bike Association.

The committee unanimously approved the recommendation. If final approval is granted, the recreational mountain bike and hiking trails will continue to be open to the public from May 1st through October 31. The staff report is available HERE.
