Like many events, the Coldest Night of the Year has had to get creative amidst pandemic restrictions.
The event is a walk—participants can choose a two- or five-kilometre option—that raises funds for charities that serve people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and hurt. It’s held annually nationwide, with local donations supporting The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation. Since 2013, the local charity has considered Coldest Night of the Year one of its largest fundraising initiatives.
“We are confident in our decision to go virtual this year having witnessed momentum in Huntsville since mid-
December,” said the organization in a message to its supporters. “Our goal is to raise $45,000 and with your
help we are certain to get there.”
Participants register for free and fundraise online, either individually or as part of a virtual team. On event day (February 20), or anytime in February, registrants can walk either a posted route or a route of their own choice, either on their own or in small groups that comply with COVID restrictions.
Those who raise a minimum amount ($150 for adults or $75 for youth 17 and under) will receive a Coldest Night of the Year toque, which can be picked up at The Table’s office at 9 Hanes St. on Feb. 18 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
As of publication time, the 2021 event has raised $27,852, with team The Town Walkers, led by Councillor Jason FitzGerald, in the lead with $13,506 raised, followed by Walking Cold Warriors, led by Katy McGregor, with $5,673.
Funds raised support The Table’s programs and services. Learn more about the organization here.
