Clement and Miller on 2016 and their hopes for the coming year

We asked our federal and provincial representatives for this riding what they thought of 2016, what they’d change and their hopes for 2017. Here’s what they said:

Worst of 2016 – All of these deaths that affected us all, from Bowie to Carrie to Leonard Cohen. So many important voices lost! Fortunately their legacy stays with us.

Best of 2016 – Gord Downie’s amazing goodbye to us, and using his remaining time to advocate. An amazing example.

What would you change? Well, certainly I worry about Canada’s wealth and health after the first full year of Mr. Trudeau as PM. I wish he hadn’t imposed more taxes on small businesses and individuals, and would not waste billions with no discernible positive impact. And clearly his plans to reform the electoral system are an embarrassing bust.

Hopes for 2017? Canada’s 150th anniversary, I would like to see improvement for ordinary people. Better job prospects, an ability to pay their energy bills without having to worry about groceries, and better futures for our young people. Let’s have all our politicians tell it like it is, and get positive stuff done!!

Worst of 2016 – For me was losing my mother in September. You only have one mother, and when she is gone it leaves a void.

Best of 2016 – The best was having our oldest daughter Abigale and family (husband Mike and granddaughters Beatrice and Noelle) return to live in Ontario after living in China the past five years. Beatrice and Noelle are 3 and 1, so it is great to be able to see them other than on Skype!
What would you change? I would have better maintained winter road conditions; more affordable electricity bills; and sustainable hospitals/health system. All things we did not have the past year.
Hopes for 2017? I hope for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2017 for family, friends and the people of Parry Sound-Muskoka, where your goals are fulfilled and you are able to enjoy life. Life is short, and it goes by in a flash, so we should make the most of it, and enjoy it!
Happy New Year!

Tony, you disappoint me. Entertainment stars come and go and are constantly applauded. Yes it is sad to see them pass, but they leave behind a wonderful legacy.
Focusing on an even sadder situation closer to home is the daily damage and continual stress created by Hydro One , especially to its rural customers. They ask folks to conserve and become more energy efficient, which we do, but with less of a cash flow, rates have to be increased far too often to meet their daily costs, to the point where people just can’t keep up. Failure to pay means being disconnected or being put on a very long payment plan to reduce the balance. The stress and fear this creates is ludicrous and often does have an impact on our health care system, as a result. Watching families and businesses dissolve is a far sadder happening and it is right here at home, not in Hollywood.
