Charles Cooper files to run for Mayor of Lake of Bays in the 2026 municipal election

Charles Cooper has filed his nomination papers for the position of Mayor of the Township of Lake of Bays for the 2026 Municipal Election.

According to his dedicated website, Cooper has been a resident of Lake of Bays for 24 years and believes in strong communities. Cooper has been a volunteer firefighter in Lake of Bays, Co-founder of the Dwight Winter Pantry (local Food Bank), a local business owner and past President of the Tasso, Toad, Blue and Camp Lake Cottagers Association. 

He has two daughters who grew up on Tasso Lake and continue to enjoy the beauty of this area and its close proximity to Algonquin Park.

2026 Platform

Cooper’s goal is to improve the roads, enhance the community and streamline the two-tiered local government structure.”You as a ratepayer deserve better, that includes stewardship of existing resources, personal accountability and financial discipline,” he notes.

Volunteer

According to Cooper, community involvement is central to his life’s tenets. Here are a few of his contributions:

  • Board Member One Kids Place (Children Treatment Centre / Autism program)
  • Funder / Founder Dwight Winter Pantry
  • Volunteer Firefighter Lake of Bays
  • President of the Tasso Toad Camp and Blue Lake Cottagers Association
  • Chair of the Board for Peel Senior Link
  • Board member Trafalgar Senior Homes
  • Member of the City of Mississauga Environmental Action Committee
  • Twenty-year Ski Instructor for Track 3, teaching disabled children how to ski.

Political affiliation

Cooper states that he is not a member of any political party but has a very centred view of the world. The environment and its future trajectory are very important and must be addressed in an impactful, sustainable way while balancing current economic and social realities. He believes elected officials need to listen to the ratepayers (regardless of how they voted) and be accountable to everyone to ensure the best governance for all.

In the 2022 election, Charles Cooper ran for representative of the District and Franklin & Sinclair Wards. He came in second with 456 votes (37.13% of the vote) compared to the winner, current Councillor Mike Peppard, with 574 votes (46.74% of the vote).
