On June 19, Lake of Bays resident Brad Robinson was presented with the township’s 2018 Senior of the Year award.
Robinson is a well-known figure in Lake of Bays as the second generation to own and operate Dorset’s renowned Robinson’s General Store, which has been in his family since 1921. Third and fourth generations of the family now work alongside him.
His nomination for the award notes, “There are very few people, permanent or summer visitors who have not been touched by his kindness and big welcoming smile.”
The nomination also mentioned his dedication to the community, affectionately calling him “Mr. Dorset”.
Among his community endeavours cited were: founding member of the Dorset Volunteer Fire Department; instrumental in the return of the S.S. Bigwin Steamship; supporter of the Dorset Community Health Care Hub; supporter of numerous children’s programs in the community; involvement with the rebuilding of the Dorset Recreation Centre; supporter of Dorset Community Partnership Fund projects; and involvement with the Dorset Heritage Museum. “Brad’s tireless works and efforts in the community and for its people are greatly appreciated and do not go unnoticed.”
The Ontario Senior of the Year Award is a provincial award given by municipalities to recognize an outstanding senior who has contributed to the community after the age of 65—someone who has enriched the social, cultural or civic life of the community, making it a better place to live. It is typically awarded during Seniors’ Month in June.
