Bracebridge man sentenced to jail for motel stabbing, break and enter

A 32-year-old Bracebridge man has been sentenced to jail after pleading guilty to multiple offences stemming from separate incidents in 2024 and 2025.

Douglas Sweeney, 32, of Bracebridge, appeared in Bracebridge court where he pleaded guilty to assault, break and enter, aggravated assault, and driving while suspended.

The court heard that on July 30, 2024, Ontario Provincial Police received a call regarding a suspected impaired driver at the Circle K on Taylor Road in Bracebridge. Police located and stopped the vehicle, determining that the driver, Sweeney, was operating the vehicle while under suspension.

In a separate incident, the court heard that on June 4, 2025, Sweeney broke into a room at a Bracebridge motel on Manitoba Street where a man and woman were staying. The victims reported hearing Sweeney banging on the window before he moved to the front door, which Sweeney kicked in.

Once inside the room, Sweeney pulled out a utility knife and stabbed the male victim in the leg. He then punched the female victim and smashed her cellphone. Sweeney stole money from the woman and punched her again before fleeing.

The male victim was taken to hospital for treatment. Police seized the knife at the scene and Sweeney was arrested shortly afterward.

The court was told that Sweeney has a prior criminal record.

He was sentenced to 16 months in custody, followed by 24 months of probation, and was ordered to pay a $500 fine.
