Beginning January 2, 2026, garbage brought to District waste facilities must be in clear plastic bags

On behalf of the District of Muskoka, the Township would like residents to know that beginning January 2, 2026, garbage brought to District Waste Facilities and Transfer Stations must be placed in clear bags.

This follows the same program for curbside collection introduced in March 2025, which has already shown strong and positive results, including a 38% decrease in garbage collected and a 99% increase in green bin organics collected.

Clear bags help ensure recyclables and organics are sorted properly, keep hazardous items out of the landfill, and improve safety for collection crews.

Residents may include up to two small opaque privacy bags inside each clear bag. Privacy bags should be no larger than a standard grocery bag (20×20 inches).

This change is part of ongoing efforts to protect Muskoka’s environment and extend the life of the District’s only landfill.
