Athlete of the Week: Mitch Cox

The Muskoka Aquatic Club (MUSAC) is losing one of their long-time swimmers, but one they won’t soon forget.

Mitch Cox, 18, will be retiring from his MUSAC career and heading off to swim varsity at Laurentian University next year. Mitch has been recognized as the Athlete of the Week for his four years of determination and commitment to the sport of swimming and for finishing his final year with amazing results.

Shannon Young, MUSAC’s social media and promotion coordinator describes Mitch as being a role model and mentor to the younger swimmers of MUSAC. “He has become a huge part of MUSAC and he will be greatly missed,” she said.

Mitch began swimming at the age of eight with the Rocky Island Swim Club in Huntsville. He did not always enjoy the sport as he used to threaten to quit the team after every practice when he was 12, but after a year of growth and strength, Mitch realized that he had potential and saw that he was a good, fast swimmer.

Now, at age 18, Mitch has made an appearance on almost every record board for his races. “Not surprising, considering how much time and effort Mitch puts into swimming,” said Young. His 2017/18 swim season has been incredible for Mitch. He says his most memorable moment was at the Team Championships in Brantford back in December when he felt as if he was swimming to his full potential.

Mitch qualified to compete in the 2018 Ontario Summer Provincials, held June 28-July 1, in the following events:
Male 17 & Over 100M Backstroke
Male 17 & Over 200M Freestyle (Mitch raced a two-second best time, almost breaking the two-minute barrier with a time of 2:00!)
Male 17 & Over 100M Freestyle (In preliminaries, Mitch had his best time ever and moved up seven places in the race ranking.)
Male 17 & Over 200M Backstroke
Male 15 & Over 200M Medley Relay A
Male 15 & Over 400M Free Relay A

Mitch loves to swim and compete but he is also looking forward to getting his social life back. One of his future plans is to travel and experience tropical scenery and swim. The MUSAC team wishes Mitch all the best next year in the pool, in class and in life!
