Athlete of the week: Ashley Campbell

Ashley Campbell achieved one of her personal goals earlier this month when she officially earned a spot on the Ontario Ski Team (OST).

Campbell has been training with the team since May 2018 and racing in the U16 category. She qualified for OST based on her 2017/18 race results.

When she was invited to join the Ontario Ski Team she said she was “excited and felt I had accomplished one of my lifelong goals.”

Campbell has been skiing since the age of two and has an ultimate goal of competing at the Olympics and in the World Cup Tour.

“I compete because of my love of the sport as well as the feeling of accomplishment and improvement,” she said.

There have been many ups and downs in her skiing career but Campbell has had many successful results to be proud of. Her best accomplishment so far was when she won the Super G and Giant Slalom races at the Canadian Nationals last year.

“Overall, every trip brings so many fun experiences and learning opportunities,” Campbell said.

Team Ontario is currently in Colorado training for their first races of the 2018/19 season which start on November 26 with two Super G and two Slalom races in Loveland at Copper Mountain.

The team travels to different locations to train, including Mammoth Mountain, California; Mt. Hood, Oregon; El Colorado, Chile; and in Europe depending on snow conditions. Come December, the team will train in Western Canada and then in eastern North America (Ontario, Quebec, Vermont and Maine).
