“I dance because it makes me happy,” says 16-year-old Andrea Hill. “When I’m dancing, I forget about everything else.”
Hill has been dancing since she was 18 months old. She loves to train and compete in all styles of dance at Muskoka Dance Academy including Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Acro, Silks and Lyrical, but her favorite style is Acro.
Hill’s passion and commitment for her sport have led to an amazing opportunity: she’s been invited to compete with Canada’s National Dance Team at the Dance World Cup Finals in Rome, Italy in June 2020. Hill will represent Canada on the Junior/Intermediate Acro Team and will be one of more than 6,000 dancers from 45 different countries competing.
Hill’s dance teacher, Sue Kirwin Campbell, describes her as a hard-working, dedicated and passionate athlete. “She is kind, encouraging and adored by her peers. She has a strong, artistic, competitive yet humble spirit and the ability to make everyone feel a part of her journey.”
Not only does Hill train 18 hours a week for her dance, she balances it with school and other sports like soccer. She loves to perform and hopes to make dance her future career. “Making a living doing what I love would be the ultimate goal,” she says.
Hill is well on her way to opening doors for her future dance career. In addition to her acceptance to the National Acro Dance Team, Hill has received a full paid scholarship to Matricks Acro Intensive for Acro Excellence, a $500 scholarship for Breaking Bounds Dance Summer Intensive, the Hollywood summer tour $500 scholarship, another full paid scholarship to the Performing Arts Educators of Canada workshop, and a half convention scholarship to the Embrace Dance Competition and Convention, plus she was the winner of Huntsville’s Got Talent in 2018.
On June 30, she competed in Orlando, Florida at the ‘Star Power’ National competition with an Acro solo. She began rehearsals with the National Acro Dance Team this month, which are taught by the World Performance Canada choreographers at the Turning Pointe Academy of Dance in Toronto.
Hill’s future is bright and filled with opportunity. In her recent open audition in Florida, Hill received a call that she earned a placement to register for a performing arts school, The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles, starting this summer. Although she wasn’t prepared to accept the placement right now, she is thrilled just knowing that she was accepted.
For now, she will continue to train and concentrate on fundraising and finding sponsorships to offset her travel costs for the Dance World Cup Finals where she hopes to bring home the Gold!
