Applications now open for the second annual law scholarship in Mark Reid’s memory

After awarding the very first law scholarship in honour of Mark Reid last summer, the Mark’s Ride Scholarship committee is excited to open applications for the second annual award.

Mark Reid was a lawyer who loved his community and loved cycling. What better way to honour his memory than an annual bike ride to raise funds for a scholarship to help a Muskoka resident attending law school?

The first annual Mark’s Ride was held in September 2015, just weeks after Mark died. The ride, which starts at the Oxtongue Lake Community Centre, went through Algonquin Park in its first two official years, and for ten years prior to that when it was a fun group ride organized by local cyclist Jim Brendish. For 2017, the ride has been rerouted due to construction in Algonquin Park.

Proceeds from the ride – a suggested donation of $50 or more per rider – go to the scholarship fund with the scholarship winner receiving all of the money raised at the previous year’s ride. Applications are open to Muskoka residents who are entering or enrolled in law school this September.

Applicants just need to write a letter of no more than 600 words telling the scholarship committee about themselves – their experiences, their hopes for the future and their interests both in and outside of law – and submit it to [email protected].

Previous applicants are welcome to apply again. “We heard from many great students and would love to hear from them again,” said Carrie Campbell, Mark’s wife.

The committee will select the applicant they feel is most worthy based on the values Mark found most important. The deadline to apply is June 30 and the scholarship will be awarded in August. Learn more here.
